Top Tips for wearing Bodycon Dresses

What is a bodycon dress?

Bodycon dresses were a big hit in the glamour days of the 1990s, standing out because of the streamlined look they created on the female figure. The style of bodycon pertains to body conscious as this is categorically a dress to flaunt your figure with not to cover it.

A bodycon dress refers to a tight-fitting, hip hugging dress, made of elasticised fabric or blended fabric such as spandex or lycra. They tend to be of a short length, usually falling to roughly thigh level although you do find longer versions.

Due to the skin tight design, the cut of this dress definitely isn't for everyone. Typically the bodycon is best suited for an hourglass figure - equal bust to hip ratio, going in at the waist. When considering how the dress is made, clingy tight fabric, it is easy to see that curvy body types will look better than straight body types. Bodycon dresses are generally low cut at the neck, hence larger bust sizes can look sensational as opposed to smaller chests. Because of this, shapeless women will find the fact that the dress isn't what they're after. Moreover, pear-shaped bodytypes, hip width that exceeds bust size, need to avoid bodycon dresses. Bear in mind, there’s nowhere for your body to hide in a dress like this, and as pears by definition have large bottoms minus the large chest to add balance, the bodycon will undoubtedly showcase less favourable aspects of your body while negating your better bits.

But now, just because you are an hourglass, you can still find tons of ways this dress can be worn to match the style you’re aiming for, and also several problems to stay away from. You can buy bodycon dresses with cutouts so as to add a certain amount of flexibility to the dress. Check where the cutouts are made and what bits of your body you could be showing off. If you're lucky enough to have a flat belly, side cutouts could create a touch of sassiness, but as you can imagine this would be best suited for a night of clubbing than in the workplace. Additionally, there are a lot of versions with cutouts down the back, including with criss-crossing straps. This would be a fantastic look for women with shapely shoulders together with a smattering of elegance.

On the other hand, to make the most of your legs, and still look prudent and respectable in the office, go with a slash or u neck style without any pattern and a matching cardigan. Choose a single colour as well, a grey bodycon dress will look smart and classy at the same time.
